MGAH Application Process

The application process for the Moscow State Academy of Choreography (Bolshoi Ballet Academy) can be quiet confusing, especially if you do not speak Russian and do not live in Russia. I will try my best to explain how the application process works for international students. If you have any questions after reading, please feel free to comment below and I will answer to the best of my ability. The first thing to cover is the actual getting into the Academy aspect. For an international student to get accepted, they either have to apply via a DVD or via the summer intensive that the Bolshoi Ballet Academy puts on. I was accepted after completing the second session of the summer intensive in 2015.

AUDITION VIA DVD
For applying by DVD, there are different exercise requirements depending on your age. Click here to view the requirements. Keep in mind, the video should not go over 20 minutes. Along with your video, you will need to send a copy of your passport, an audition application, and personal data form. I believe these two forms to be here (I am pretty sure they just did a typo), but I would check with the Academy first.

AFTER BEING ACCEPTED
The process should be the same for all international students after being accepted. Here is everything you need to do:
     1) Send a copy of your passport along with a notarized translation of it and a copy of the personal data form/application form. I completed the application form on paper and sent this in, but there also seems to be the online (linked above) form as well. Once the academy receives this, they will mail out your visa invitation and the contract. At the bottom of this page, I have put the link to both of the contracts.
     2) Once you get these papers, go on to the Embassy of the Russian Federation and select the closest consulate to you. Complete the online application and send the required documents to this consulate. They will provide you with the list of things you must send to complete the visa process. My first year, the process was fairly simple and smooth, although this past summer (2017) proved to be more difficult. Keep this in mind, and give yourself a good amount of time to get your visa.
Read more about the visa procedure here.
     3) Now this takes us to the contract. The contract will be for the traineeship (1 year) program. Everything will be in Russian, but the general idea of it is that you will follow the rules, take note of the weight chart, not set the place on fire, etc. All you need to do is sign on the dotted line. If you need help translating, I suggest getting the Google Translate app and using the camera option. If you still need help, feel free to contact me.
     4) The Academy will require you to supply the following things:
          -A school transcript
          -Choreographic studies confirmation
          -The medical form (found here)
          -Your medical insurance policy
All of these documents must be translated and notarized. The Academy will specify on whether you need to bring these forms with your or mail them.
     5) Before arriving at the Academy, make sure you have:
          -Your passport/visa
-The migration card that is given to you at the border point (do not lose this!!)
-10 photographs (black-and-white), 3x4cm in matte form (yes, this is small, but bring this size!)
-1600 rubles for the multiple entry visa along with 200 more rubles to cover the Federal Migration Service

ARRIVING AT THE ACADEMY
Once you are finally at the Academy, you will need to go to the International Relations Department. This office is located on the first floor. When entering the lobby, turn left into the long hallway, and go to office 5 (it will be on the left). They will take your contract (the original copy), your passport original copy, the notarized passport copy, the migration card, the enrollment form, the medical form, your medical insurance policy, transcripts and other documents confirming past education and ballet studies, your CV, the 10 pictures, and payment for the multi-entry visa.
The link for this list is here.

Remember, all medical and educational documents (including the CV) must have a notarized translation except the medical insurance policy.

You can view the two contracts here. The full-time education program is the contract offered usually after your first year. This includes the academic classes and is a three year program. The traineeship program is the contract usually offered for your first year and also is an option for your second, third, etc years. I have always been under the traineeship contract. It is a one year contract with no academics other than Russian language. The contract you choose is entirely up to you, for me, traineeship just worked out better.
